I Like Far Cry 2
A couple weeks ago I got really into the Rev Rant series from Anthony Burch (creator of HAWP and now writer on Borderlands 2) and ended up watching this video:
I was shocked at how interesting Far Cry 2 sounded seen as I had never looked into it due to the response it got from general gamers. Anyway, eventually I went over to greenman gaming and found it was only £4.99 and I had £5 left in my account so I thought, what the hell. Grabbed it, and now I love it.
Honestly the stuff he talks about in the video is great, the buddies in the game I do honestly care about and I even had to reload a past save because a buddy was dying and I had no way of saving him. I also love how everything very much like half life, it’s all in the eyes of the character creating some good immersion. Another point is that when I got a mission to kill a man I was like “okay lets go” but straight away my buddy called with an alternate way to complete the mission if I wished to do it another way. This lead me to grabbing a boat, sailing to a village and stealing a book then destroying a cop and eventually helping destroy a convoy. What was at first just a normal “kill him” mission turned into an epic hour long adventure than just another side quest to finish and it felt great.
All of this comes together nicely and what topped it off was one part in a village. I was all by myself and had killed a lot of people, I ran upstairs and was exploring when I could hear the enemy talking below me. They were walking around wondering where I was, they would come across a dead body and say stuff like “oh man, he got the new guy” and actually have some good banter going along with some REALLY good voice acting. Even when I took a step they would go “I can hear him” and hide in the corner waiting for me. It was such a well done scene that it became really tense as we both hunted each other out, this was an NPC I was against and it still put me on edge due to how it was playing out. For that, I love Far Cry 2 and you should give it a shot.
